Join Cynthia Schubert for a demonstration and hands-on experience with
Calligraphy and Cold Wax: experimenting with oil media. Cynthia Schubert
teaches Calligraphy and IB Visual Art at Hillsboro High School. She
has shown her work locally and in 2005 a piece of hers using cold wax
and oil was published in Letter Arts Review. She will share techniques
using cold wax, galkyd and oil paint on a variety of surfaces. Come
enjoy the examples of her work using cold wax and a demonstration of
sgraffito, palette knife and monotype techniques on paper, wood and
gesso surfaces. Roll up your sleeves and experience these techniques
yourself. Please bring two containers with lids, such as a yogurt or
cottage cheese tub; rag or shop towels; palette knives if you have
them—metal trowel type are best; putty knife if you have one;
oil brushes; pencils; sgraffito tools; tubes of your favorite oil colors,
if you have them. The Society will provide 300 lb watercolor paper,
wax, galkyd and odorless mineral spirits. You may want to bring other
heavy paper that has been gessoed for more experiments, scraps of birch
plywood, or gessoed panels, whatever you may have under the bed. You
can work on top of discarded watercolor pieces, too.

Monthly Meeting • St. Andrew's Presbyterian Church • Topic: Carol
Dubosch: The Pop-Can Pen and its Expressive Potential. These
pens are simple to make and simple to use and promote expressive writing
from the very first marks on the page. In a side-by-side comparison
with commercial folded pens, the "pop-can pen" is preferred
by my students. These pens are likely to become your favorite writing
tool. Folded pen script is easy to learn and has a unique and expressive
contemporary feel. By custom- making your pens, you'll be able to fit
the pen to your hand and also to the "look" of the letters
you want to create.
