Hiring a Calligrapher
adapted from the Washington Calligraphy Guild

The Portland Society for Calligraphy has a number of outstanding scribes who can be hired to do freelance work. The following list is provided as a service to the members and to the public. All business arrangements are strictly between you and the calligrapher, the Portland Society for Calligraphy takes no responsibility for any problems that may arise as a result of any business relationship.

If you are not familiar with the art of calligraphy or have never commissioned work before, we offer these suggestions:

1: Contact several calligraphers for a cost estimate for your particular job.

2: You can ask to see samples of work related to the type you want to commission.

3: Regarding your work arrangement, be specific in the following: Price, Completion date/turnaround time, Pickup/delivery options, Materials that will be used/ink, paper, colors, Pickup/delivery options, Minimum quantities needed for the job, etc.

Feel free to discuss the calligrapher's background, experience and available references, and talk about the script and design elements you have been thinking about. Be sure to listen to the calligrapher for his or her suggestions, however.

You must supply the calligrapher with a text that is legible and worded (and spelled) exactly as you want it to appear. When multiple items are involved, provide extra envelopes or certificates as a courtesy to the calligrapher.

We love this art of beautiful writing and are pleased that you appreciate it also.
